Trenching That Accounts for the Winter
A water line at the wrong depth in this county is a line that freezes, and a frozen line in January is a problem you cannot fix in January. Frost depth is the single most important number in this work, and it is not the same everywhere. Elevation, aspect, soil and whether the ground gets consistent snow cover all move it.
We dig to depth, bed the line properly, and backfill in a way that does not leave the trench settling into a channel that funnels surface water along the pipe.

Locates, and the Lines Nobody Has a Record Of
We call 811 before we dig, every time. What 811 will not mark is private infrastructure: the line somebody ran to the barn twenty years ago, the old well feed, the buried power to the shop. Those exist on a lot of rural property here and no public locate knows about them. If you have any idea where they are, tell us. If you do not, we dig accordingly and go slower where it makes sense.
Backfill and Compaction
A trench that is backfilled loose settles, and a settled trench across a driveway or a yard becomes a rut that collects water and eventually points it at something you care about. Compacting in lifts is the difference between a trench you forget about and one you notice every spring.

Common Questions
How deep does a water line need to be in Routt County?
Deep enough to sit below frost, and that depth varies with elevation, aspect and soil across this county. There is no single number that is right everywhere, which is exactly why it is worth having someone who works here dig it rather than guessing from a figure online.
Who calls 811, me or the contractor?
We do, as the party doing the digging. It is free and it is required. What we need from you is anything you know about private lines on the property, because those are not part of the public locate.
Can you find and repair a line that is already broken?
Usually. Locating it is the first job and sometimes the longest one, especially where there are no records. Once it is exposed the repair itself is often quick.
Can trenching be done in winter?
Sometimes, and it costs more. Frozen ground is slow to dig and hard to backfill and compact properly. If the work can wait for the ground to open up, it should.
