A Driveway Is a Drainage Problem First

Most failed driveways in this valley did not fail because of the gravel. They failed because water had nowhere to go. Get the crown, the ditch and the culvert right and a gravel drive will hold up for years with light maintenance. Get them wrong and you will be rebuilding it every spring, no matter how much rock you put down.

That is why we start with where the water comes from and where it is going, not with how many loads of road base you want.

What We Build

  • ✓New gravel driveways, from the house down to the county road
  • ✓Regrading and reshaping existing drives that have gone flat or rutted
  • ✓Crown and ditch work so water leaves the surface instead of running along it
  • ✓Culvert installation and replacement at the road and at cross-drainage points
  • ✓Washout and spring runoff repair
  • ✓Base repair on soft spots, including geotextile where the ground calls for it
  • ✓Road base and gravel supplied and hauled, see trucking and gravel delivery

Steep Ground and Long Drives

A lot of property here comes with a driveway that is longer than the one the builder budgeted for, and steeper. Grade, surface material and drainage all have to change on a steep drive, and a surface that works at the bottom will wash off the top. If your drive climbs, say so when you call, because it changes the answer.

Maintenance Is Cheaper Than Rebuilding

A gravel drive that gets reshaped on a sensible cycle stays a maintenance line item. One that gets left until it is rutted and holding water becomes a rebuild. If you have a drive that is starting to hold puddles or lose its crown, that is the moment it is cheapest to fix.

For drainage problems that go beyond the driveway itself, see land grading and drainage. For roads serving more than one property, see private road construction.

Common Questions

What does a gravel driveway cost per foot?

It depends on width, the depth of base the ground needs, how much shaping and ditching is involved, whether a culvert is required, and how far the material has to be hauled. A short flat drive on good ground and a long steep one on soft ground are not comparable. We will give you a firm number after looking at it rather than a per-foot figure that turns out to be wrong.

It varies with traffic, grade and how well it drains, but most drives here benefit from reshaping every few years, and sooner if you are seeing ruts or standing water. A drive that drains properly needs it much less often than one that does not.

If your drive crosses a ditch or a drainage path, almost certainly, and there may be a requirement where it meets a county road. Sizing matters as much as having one. An undersized culvert plugs and then the water simply goes over the top and takes the driveway with it.

Usually, and the fix is almost never more gravel. It is finding where the water is coming from and giving it somewhere to go, then rebuilding the surface with a proper crown so it sheds rather than collects.
