Florissant lies at around 8,200 feet on US 24, and two miles south on Teller County Road 1 is Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument. The Park Service explains that the valley there sits on eroded Pikes Peak Granite, layered with volcanic tuff and old lake-bed shale, which is the kind of mixed ground that makes every building site a little different.

We are Dream Ridge Excavating, based in Toponas in Routt County, a long drive north. Around Florissant we take on the larger projects that justify the trip.

High Fire Risk in Florissant Heights

Teller County’s wildfire protection plan rated the Florissant Heights area as high risk, and it names wildland fire as the greatest natural hazard in the county. Homes in the trees around Florissant benefit most from defensible space done properly, zone by zone out from the house.

That work includes thinning, removing ladder fuels and standing dead trees, dealing with slash, and making sure the driveway gives a fire engine room to get in and back out.

Every Site Is a Little Different

Granite in one place, softer lake sediments in another: the ground around Florissant does not behave the same from lot to lot. We look at a site before planning site preparation or foundation excavation, rather than assuming what is under the surface.

Driveways and Access

Teller County Public Works issues driveway permits in unincorporated areas like Florissant, with requirements for grade, width and turning radius so emergency vehicles can use them. A property that takes access directly off US 24 needs a Colorado Department of Transportation access permit as well. We build driveways with those requirements in mind.
