The Heavy End of Landscaping

This is machine landscaping. Moving earth and rock, shaping ground, placing boulders, spreading topsoil and preparing a site so that planting and finishing can happen. It is not garden design, and we would not pretend otherwise. If you have a landscape designer, we are the outfit that executes the parts requiring an excavator.

A Note on Retaining Walls

There is an important distinction between placing boulders for landscape effect and building an engineered structural retaining wall that is holding back a load. They are different jobs with different requirements, and anything genuinely structural should be engineered. Tell us what the wall is actually doing and we will tell you honestly whether it is our job or one for a wall contractor and an engineer.

Growing Things at This Elevation

New lawn and planted areas here live or die on soil preparation and on what the ground does with water. Thin native soil, a short season and a lot of runoff mean that the work below the surface matters more than the seed. Getting the fall right and the soil depth right is the difference between an area that establishes and one you reseed every year.

If the underlying issue is water rather than planting, that is land grading and drainage, and it should be sorted first.

Common Questions

Do you do garden design and planting?

No. We do the machine work: shaping, topsoil, rock and preparation. Design and planting are somebody else’s trade, and we are happy to work alongside whoever you have.

Depends on what it is holding. Placed boulder and stone work for landscape purposes, yes. An engineered structural wall retaining a significant load is a different specialty and should be designed by an engineer. Describe what it needs to do and we will give you a straight answer.

Yes, and it is regular work. Reshaping, bringing in topsoil and getting the fall right so the finished ground drains away from the building.

Timing matters at this elevation. Late spring through summer gives the best establishment window. Preparing ground late in the fall usually means it sits over winter and you seed the following year.
