Woodland Park is a city of hills. Its official elevation is 8,465 feet, but the ground inside city limits runs from about 8,100 to 9,000 feet, with US 24 carrying traffic east and west, Colorado 67 north and south, and the Pike National Forest wrapping around the north, east and west sides.

Dream Ridge is an excavating contractor based in Toponas, in Routt County, far to the north. In Woodland Park we take on the larger projects, such as new builds and full site packages, rather than small call-outs.

Building on Slopes

With nearly 900 feet of elevation change across the city, many Woodland Park lots are sloped, and that shapes every part of a build. The foundation excavation has to suit the grade, the driveway has to climb without washing out, and drainage has to carry snowmelt around the house instead of into it.

We plan cut, fill and drainage together, so the site works as one piece and the building pad is ready for the foundation contractor when they arrive.

City Permits Come Before Building Permits

Woodland Park has its own two-step process. You start with a Zoning Development Permit from the city, which covers items including driveways, and then building permits are handled through the Pikes Peak Regional Building Department. It is worth knowing the order before a project is scheduled.

Most of the city is on public sewer. The city’s planning documents noted only a couple of hundred customers in the southeast part of town on septic systems, so septic is rarely the issue in town that it is out in the county.

Fire Mitigation on the Forest Edge

With National Forest on three sides, Woodland Park has its own community wildfire protection plan through the Greater Woodland Park Healthy Forest Initiative. On wooded lots, fire mitigation can be done alongside site work in the same visit, which is the most efficient way to use a trip.

Common Questions

Do you work inside Woodland Park city limits?

Yes, on larger projects such as new home sites. We are based in Toponas in Routt County, so this is travel work rather than local service.

The city’s process starts with a Zoning Development Permit, which includes driveways, and building permits are then handled through the Pikes Peak Regional Building Department.

Not necessarily. Many Woodland Park lots are sloped. The foundation excavation, driveway and drainage just need to be planned together for the grade.
